Death sentences were imposed on 12 individuals today by the Colombo and Polonnaruwa High Courts.

Colombo High Court judge Preethi Padman Soorasena imposed the death sentence on 8 individuals who were engaged in a large scale drug smuggling racket under the guise of fishermen.

The convicted include 3 Sri Lankans and 5 Indians.

The group was arrested by the Navy in the northern seas in 2011 with 955.4 grams of heroin in their possession.

Meanwhile 4 individuals who were found guilty of murder were sentenced to death by the Polonnaruwa High Court.

The verdict was delivered by High Court judge Clinton Deff to 4 individuals of the same family.

They were found guilty for the murder of an individual in the Yudaganawa area in Polonnaruwa in 1996.
