Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that government officers cannot evacuate residents from disaster prone areas, but the political authority should do it instead.

The Opposition Leader expressed his views during his inspection tour of the landslide-hit Meeriyabedda in Koslanda in Haldummulla this morning.

Meanwhile Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told a media conference to inform Cabinet decisions held in Colombo today that Meeriyabedda had been declared a landslide prone area beforehand.

At the same time, Frontline Socialist Party Central Working Committee member Duminda Nagamuwa charges that the awareness programs about the imminent landslide had not been implemented properly.

The Meeriyabedda tragedy took center stage in parliament today and Chief Opposition Whip MP John Amaratunga said all parliamentarians should donate their salary for the welfare of disaster hit people.

Meanwhile UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that there is a delay in retrieving the dead bodies buried in Meeriyabedda.

Responding to MP Kiriella, Minister Susil Premajayantha raised to say that it needed to be done with caution.

Meanwhile shops were closed in the Sea Street in Colombo today and religious rituals were conducted to pass merit on the dead at Meeriyabedda.

At the same time, our correspondent said that workers attached to the estates of Badulla, Ragala, Pitamaruwa and Elamana wore black bands to report for work this morning.

The workers also prepared to donate a day’s wage for the welfare of the affected people in Meeriyabedda.
