Workers attached to the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport gave up their strike this afternoon as the authorities took action to fulfil their demands.

The strike was launched by the members of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya Airport branch on 5 demands including a salary increase of 10 thousand rupees.

Airport operations as well as flights operations were disrupted for nearly 4 hours from 9am thereby causing much inconvenience to the passengers.

Sri Lankan Airlines Media Manager Deepal Perera said the officials found it difficult to check the passengers at the departure terminal after electricity was disconnected by the strikers.

Consequently a Shanghai bound flight scheduled to take off at 12 noon and a London bound flight scheduled to take off at 2.30 in the afternoon were delayed.

However on the instructions of the President, a delegation led by Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayarathna and Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunaratna rushed to the airport.

The Ministers and their delegation were compelled to walk to the airport as the auto-gates at the entrance were inoperative due to power disruption.

Secretary of Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya Airport branch Dinesh Nandika Perera told our news team that the subject minister agreed to increase their salary by 8 thousand rupees.
