STF has been called to provide security to the Negombo area following a clash which erupted between two factions of fishermen last night.

Police said two fishermen who sustained injuries during the clash have been admitted to the hospital.

A fishing vessel has also been damaged.

The fishermen in Negombo engaged in a demonstration yesterday against the selling of certain types of fish from South, in the Negombo beach.

A discussion was also held yesterday in this regard under the intervention of deputy minister of fisheries and the religious leaders in the area.

Our area correspondent said that the clash has erupted last night following the discussion.

A tense situation arose during the discussions which were held at the St. Mary’s Church in Negombo yesterday.

The fishermen have been protesting since Monday claiming that their livelihood is threatened due to the sale of fish from the South in Negombo and dry-fish industry being carried out along the coastal area.

Nearly 3000 fishermen from Negombo, Kuttiduwa, Kammalthota, Wella-veediya, Palangature and Eaththukala have joined the protest today.

Accordingly a discussion was held regarding the matter with the participation of a group of priests including Fr. Patrick Perera, representatives of 21 fisheries unions, dry-fish producers, deputy minister of fisheries Sarath Kumara Gunaratne and Western Province minister Nimal Lanza.

A tense situation arose during the discussions with the dry-fish producers stating the requirement to bring fish from south for their industry.

The fishermen noted that they cannot provide the negombo beach for this purpose which has been used by them for the fisheries industry for generations.

Thereafter the situation was brought under control with the intervention of the priests.

The fishermen have agreed to suspend the protest until a solution would be provided within a week after a discussion with the cardinal and the presient.
