A special SMS sent to all members of the Bar association
A special SMS has been sent to 16,000 lawyers attached to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
Secretary of the Bar association attorney-at-law Ajith Pathirana told us that the SMS was sent in order to get their opinion on making the submissions in open court with regard to the two queries by the President.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court whether there is any impediment for him to contest for a third term under the provisions of the 18th Amendment.
In a letter sent to the Bar Association yesterday by the Registrar of the Supreme Court, the President has directed him to inform the decision before the 10th of this month.
Bar Association Secretary Ajith Pathirana said the President’s first query is whether he would be able to contest for a third term after the completion of 4 years in office of his second term.
Attorney-at-law Ajith Pathirana said the President’s second query which has been sought Supreme Court opinion is whether there is any hurdle under the 18th Amendment for the incumbent President to be elected to office for a third term.
Bar Association Secretary Ajith Pathirana further noted that all the members of the association should be aware of this.
