A discussion to settle the Negombo fishermen’s dispute is being held between the fishing authorities and fishing associations.

Negombo fishermen say that future actions will be taken according to the outcome of the meeting being held in Colombo.

A large number of fishermen in Negombo have protested since Monday claiming that their livelihood is threatened due to the sale of fish from the South in Negombo and dry-fish industry being carried out along the coastal area.

About 3000 fishermen put ashore their boats and boycotted venturing to sea yesterday as well.

Deputy Fisheries Minister intervened to settle the dispute yesterday but his effort turned unsuccessful.

Later the authorities together with the priests in the area, fishermen associations and dry fish manufacturers held discussions.

A tense situation erupted during the meeting, as dry fish manufacturers insisted that they should bring fish from the south to continue their industry.

Later the situation was controlled by the priests, and the protest was called off last evening until a settlement is worked out by meetings with the President and the Cardinal.

However, breaching the agreement, a lorry-load of fish has been brought to Kuttiduwa coast area last night.

Later a tense situation erupted between Negombo fishermen and Negombo South dry fish manufacturers.

Police said STF was summoned to control the situation. Two fishermen were hospitalized after the incident and a fishing boat was also damaged.

It is also reported that Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senarathna has not intervened so far to settle the problem which started last Monday.
