President can call for another Presidential election after 4 years; No impediment to contest for a 3rd term.
The Supreme Court has informed President Mahinda Rajapaksa that he has no impediment to call for a Presidential election after completion of 4 years in his present position, and contest for a third term as well.
Leader of the house Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva disclosed this determination of the Supreme Court in parliament a short while ago.
The minister said the Supreme Court has determined unanimously that there is no impediment for President Rajapaksa to contest again in a future presidential election.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa sought the Supreme Court opinion whether there was any impediment for him to contest for a third term and be elected to the post of executive president.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court determination was sent to Temple Trees yesterday.
