The UNP says that the leader of the house has no authority to announce in parliament the Supreme Court opinion on whether the President is able to contest for a third term.

Making a statement under standing orders in parliament, Opposition Whip John Amaratunga requested to provide each MP with a copy of the Supreme Court opinion.

MP Azwer speaking on behalf of the government, stated that President Mahinda Rajapaksa can seek the opinion of the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena stated that Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva announced the Supreme Court opinion during his speech in the budget debate and he did not announce it in his capacity as the leader of the house.

Therefore, if anyone wants a copy of the opinion, it could be obtained from the speaker.
