Turning a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s road history, the construction of the Northern expressway commenced yesterday.

This was under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Construction work commenced with the laying of the foundation stone at the Senkada interchange, in Galagedara – Kandy.

The Northern expressway which will be constructed in 10 stages will have its first phase extending from Enderamulla to Weyangoda, the second phase from Weyangoda to Meerigama and the third phase from Meerigama to Giriulla- Nakalagamuwa.

The 4th stage will see the expressway extending to Kurunegala and will extend to Dambulla in 3 stages.

Also the Upcountry expressway will run from Pothuhera to Galagedara via Rambukkana.

300-kilometer long highway will be constructed at a cost of 350 Billion Rupees.

The expressway which will commence from the Outer Colombo Circular Road, will be constructed as a overhead expressway up to Gampaha.

In total there are 19 interexchange’s and will consist of 4 lanes with the possibility of extending it to 6 lanes later on.

Meanwhile, the commencement of the construction work in Rambukkana was also held under the patronage of the President.

Construction work of the Silumini Doratuwa in Matale – Galewala was also commenced last afternoon under the patronage of the President.

The President after having commenced construction work from Pothuhera and Kandy addressed the crowds and stated that constitutional changes cannot be rushed because someone may be in a hurry.
