The Defence Ministry refuted certain media reports that claimed China is planning to establish a naval base in Sri Lanka.

When contacted Defence Ministry Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said such reports are baseless.

The Namibian newspaper quoted Chinese media as saying that 18 naval bases are to be established by China in various regions in the world.

Apart from Sri Lanka, the report stated that China is planning such naval bases to be established within the next 10 years in North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Maldives and Seychelles.
