India praises President for releasing fishermen sentenced to death. -Video
The High Commission of India is pleased to confirm that five Indian fishermen, who were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court on 30th October 2014, were released from prison to be sent back to India.
The Indian High Commission issuing a communiqué stated that the High Commission is deeply grateful to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, for this humanitarian gesture, which will further strengthen the strong and multi-faceted relations between India and Sri Lanka.
The High Commissioner of India, Shri Y. K. Sinha, met the five fishermen after their release to ascertain their well being.
The Colombo High Court sentenced 8 persons to death on October 30th after they were found guilty of engaging in drug dealing in international waters.
Five among the arrested are Indian nationals while the other three are Sri Lankans.
