President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the document to proclaim his intention to call for a Presidential election this afternoon.

When contacted by our news team, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that he received the Presidential election proclamation document today.

Meanwhile Government Printer Lalith de Silva said the gazette notification with regard to the President’s intention to call for an election has already been issued.

The election commissioner would issue a single gazette notification announcing the date of nominations and the date of presidential polls at his earliest.

He said that the nominations will be called on a single day; which would not be less than 16 days or not more than 21 days from the date of the pronouncement of the presidential election.

Since the nominations day, the Presidential election will be held on a day that would not be less than 28 days or not more than 42 days.

Accordingly, the election could be held early January in 2015.

The election will be held according to the voter registration list of 2014.

Meanwhile leave for the entire staff attached to the Government Printer’s Department have been cancelled.

President signs document to declare Presidential election.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has signed in the document to proclaim his intention to call for a Presidential election a short while ago.

The Presidential Media Unit stated that the proclamation would be sent to the Elections Commissioner, before it is sent to the government printer to print the relevant gazette notification.
