The long awaited common candidate unveiled today when SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithreepala Sirisena said that he would contest for the forthcoming Presidential election.
Minister Sirisena announced his candidacy during a special media conference held at the New Town Hall in Colombo this afternoon.
Minister Sirisena who remained tight-lipped last week as rumors were spreading that he would be the common candidate; participated in a ceremony to distribute letters of appointment at the Folk Art Center in Battaramulla this morning.
Addressing the gathering, the minister thanked all those who supported him during his tenure in the ministry post.
As leaving the venue at Battaramulla, journalists asked Minister Maithreepala Sirisena whether he expected to contest as the common candidate.
Political sources stated that Minister Sirisena met Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the parliament complex.
Our correspondent stated that later he reached at the New Town Hall to participate in a special media briefing where he was given a rousing welcome.
At the beginning of the media briefing, Minister Sirisena announced that he would contest as the common candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election.
