A wild elephant enters the sacred city area of Anuradhapura and tramples to death 2 persons near Jaya Sri maha bodhi. Wild life officers tranquilise the elephant.

A wild elephant entered the Sacred City of Anuradhapura this morning and trampled to death two persons in the neighborhood of the Sacred Bo tree.

One of the victims has been identified as a Civil Defence Force offiecer, while the other victim was a tom-tom beater serving for the rituals at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

The police media spokesman’s office stated that the elephant has attacked the two in the neighborhood of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

Later Wildlife officers cordoned the elephant near Malwatu Oya area as it was escaping towards Isurumuni Viharaya.

Our area correspondent Athula Bandara stated that the elephant has been tranquilized later.
