Minister Mervin Silva’s son Malaka Silva and 6 others were released on strict bail conditions today.
The 7 suspects were in remand for allegedly assaulting a British couple in a night club in Colombo recently.
Our correspondent said that the couple identified first suspect of the case Malaka Silva during the identification parade held in Colombo this morning.
While releasing Malaka Silva on a 50 thousand cash bail and another two personal bails amounting to one million each, Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammad Sahabdeen stated that bail guarantors should be his parents.
The Magistrate also imposed a ban on Malaka Silva and his accomplices entering night clubs until this case is over.
The Magistrate then ordered Malaka Silva not to intimidate the witnesses, and in the event the order is ignored, he said the suspect would be remanded until the case is heard.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th suspects who accompanied Malaka Silva were released on two personal bails amounting to 500 thousand rupees each.
The two MSD officers attached to Minister Mervin Silva’s security were also released on two personal bails amounting to 100 thousand rupees each.
However the lawyer appeared for Malaka Silva, President Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya said his client expects to appeal against the strict bail conditions imposed by the Additional Magistrate.
He stated that bail could have been granted to his client had he not be the son of Minister Mervin Silva.
Meanwhile minister Mervin Silva had visited the court today when his son Malaka Silva’s case was taken for hearing.
