A tense situation erupted in front of the Higher Education Ministry today after Inter Higher National Accountancy Diploma students arrived at the ministry to demand solutions to their problems.

The Inter Higher National Accountancy Diploma was treated equal to a commerce degree issued by a recognized university until that recognition was canceled by the Public Administration Ministry with effect from last April.

The students staged the protest against this adamant decision by the Public administration ministry without giving any prior notice.

The student protest which began in front of Fort Railway Station paraded to Higher Education Ministry via Technical Junction, Maradana, Town Hall and Ward Place.

Later police allowed 6 student representatives to meet the ministry secretary to discuss the matter.

However when students demanded police to allow the media to accompany them in the discussion with the ministry secretary, a heated argument erupted between the students and police.

Our correspondent stated that traffic was blocked at the entrance to Ward Place at Town Hall Junction.

After the media were allowed to accompany student representatives, the students met Higher Education Ministry Secretary Sunil Jayantha Navarathna.

During the meeting, the Ministry Secretary said that he would facilitate in holding a meeting between the students and the Public Administration Ministry Secretary within two weeks.
