Tamil Nadu fishermen pledge not to violate Sri Lakan maritime boundaries.
Fishermen of six districts who held a meeting at Jagadapattinam, decided to avoid entering the Sri Lankan waters beyond the International Maritime Boundary Line.
A decision was taken at the end of the discussion held by the fishermen of Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal.
They felt that all the steps should be taken to ensure smooth fishing operations.
N. Kuttiyandi, president of the Mechanised Boat owners’ Welfare Association, who presided over the meeting, said the meeting also discussed various issues, including the steps to be taken for the release of fishermen detained by Sri Lanka.
It urged the Central and State governments to take steps to retrieve the boats and nets seized by the Sri Lankan Navy.
A follow-up meeting would be held at Nagapattinam on December 10th to work out a strategy for carrying out fishing without any problem.
Meanwhile, acting fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathna stated that both countries are currently engaged in discussions to release fishermen and boats detained in both countries.
