UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim was appointed its General Secretary today.

Party National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe made this appointment after former General Secretary Tissa Attanayake resigned from the post this morning and joined the UPFA in the afternoon.

Later Kabir Hashim resigned from his previous post, and he said the party chairman position will be filled in due course.

Meanwhile the Common Opposition held a media conference at the Opposition Leader’s Office this afternoon.

Common Candidate Maithreepala Sirisena also participated in the media briefing.

During the meeting, he has handed over to a Health Ministry transport officer coupons worth of 1.3 million rupees issued to him as former Health Minister.

Addressing the same media briefing, Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka also expressed his views about the defection by MP Jayantha Katagoda.

MP Jayantha Katagoda also joined in a social gathering organized at Temple Trees this afternoon.

Rumours were rife in the morning that Anuradhapura district MP Chandrani Bandara was also expected to defect along with MP Tissa Attanayake.

However MP Chandarni Bandara who participated in the Common Opposition media briefing held this afternoon said that she would not defect.

MP Kabir Hashim has been appointed as the new General Secretary of the UNP

The Chairman of the UNP
MP Kabir Hashim has been appointed as the new General Secretary of the UNP by the party’s National Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe.

It is reported that MP Kabir Hashim will resign from his position as the Chairman of the party, in order to assume duties as the new General Secretary.

MP Tissa Attanayake who resigned from the position of UNP General Secretary this morning, visited the Temple Trees this morning and extended his support to the President.
