US warns its citizens in Sri Lanka during elections.
The United States has issued a warning to its citizens in Sri Lanka during the presidential elections campaign period.
In an alert sent to the U.S. citizens in Sri Lanka the Department of State notes that political campaigns in Sri Lanka have occasionally turned violent and urged them to avoid political rallies and demonstrations.
U.S. citizens are reminded to avoid polling stations, large public gatherings, political rallies, and demonstrations. U.S. citizens are advised to monitor local media in case of public disturbances.
The Embassy recommends U.S. citizens living or traveling in Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives to enrol with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
STEP enrolment gives the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact in an emergency.
