Russia's Putin to address Indian parliament
Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to address a joint-session of the Indian parliament on today as Moscow seeks to cement long-standing defence ties ahead of a visit by US President Barack Obama as the guest of honour for India’s Republic Day on January 26th next year.
Putin is expected to sign a series of major deals with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit, particularly in the defence-technology sector.
India is the world's largest importer of arms, buying 6 billion dollars worth of weapons last year, though the US overtook Russia this year as the country’s largest supplier, making Putin's trip an important milestone for cooperation after Moscow signed defence contracts last month with New Delhi’s bitter rival Pakistan.
