A tense situation occurred during the Jaffna District Development Committee meeting this morning.

Minister Douglas Devananda as well as Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran also attended the meeting.

During the meeting which was held under the patronage of the District Secretary, Minister Devananda expressed his views regarding the upcoming presidential election.

A tense situation occurred when the Chief Minister as well as the TNA representatives raised their objection to the minister’s comments.

A TNA representative stated that during the dispute, someone attacked with a water bottle.

Even after they left, the development committee meeting proceeded.

TNA Jaffna District MP Mawai Senadhiraja stated that TNA representatives including the Northern PC Agricultural Minister P. Ainkara-neshan and the Northern Provincial Councillor Sarvesh-waran received injuries following the water bottle attack.

The council became agitated when the MP insisted to arrest the person who instigated the bottle attack, saying that the culprit is from the Douglas Devananda’s faction.

The Jaffna District Development Committee meeting has been suspended at the moment
