We live in the age of information and technology. We literally do almost everything online these days, and shopping online is a large part of it. However, the internet is not the safest and secure place to do anything. So to keep you safe, we have some helpful tips you can follow when you do transactions online.

·         Use Familiar Websites?

Start on a trusted site (example: Kaymu.lk), rather than shopping online on an unheard website. A global brand with a local website is a good place for search for those bargains unlike other unsafe sites. Beware of misspellings or sites using a different top-level domain (.net instead of .com/.lk for example)—those are the oldest tricks in the book.

·         Look for the Lock

Do not buy anything online using your credit card from a site that doesn't have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption installed—at the very least. You'll know if the site has SSL because the URL for the site will start with HTTPS:// (instead of just HTTP://). An icon of a locked padlock will appear, typically in the status bar at the bottom of your web browser, or right next to the URL in the address bar. It depends on your browser.

·        Change your passwords frequently

Changing your password can be a tiresome deal, with so many online accounts these days it is even harder to keep track of which password to use for your online account. Changing your password, however tiresome and long is still one of the best ways to protect yourself from online phishing sites. So it’s advisable to change your password every three to six months. Remember don’t use the same password for all your online accounts, because that make all your account vulnerable if one is hacked.

·        Read that company's privacy policy

When was the last time you read the Company Privacy Policy you were dealing with? Never! So if you need to keep your account details safe, start reading that privacy policy. By reading the privacy policy, you can find out whether your user details are being sold to a third party or whether it’s encrypted and secure.

·         Browser – Keep it up-to-date

Most of the browsers these days update themselves when you connect to the internet.  Make sure you have an updated browser as well as an OS and Antivirus software, Updates are bound to keep you safe from those identity thieves and keep your credit safe.

So while you take steps to keep you’re online shopping safe, don’t miss out on great deals and remember you can always shop safely and securely on Kaymul.lk Sri Lanka’s #1 Marketplace Online.
