A new entrant in the web design space, ODDLY (www.oddly.co) impressed at the recent BestWeb.lk Awards, with the company’s work being recognized with a silver award for the best website in Sri Lanka in 2015. The company also bagged the coveted Gold in the advertising and marketing category beating some big names in the business.
This year, the annual BestWeb.lk competition saw the highest number of entrants including the work of the biggest name[MR1] s in the web development industry in Sri Lanka. Commenting on ODDLY’s performance as a relatively young firm, the company’s MD, Mr Adrian Bakelmun said “Although we only started focusing on the local web scene relatively recently, our team is made of people who have spent years in the industry and we are very passionate about doing high quality work for the Sri Lankan market”.
ODDLY’s Director of Design, Deane Jayamanne says the company differentiates its offering by focusing on a user-centric approach to its web design projects. “We employ a lot of the User Experience (UX) best practices into our work, which I think is unique in the industry in Sri Lanka,” he says. “A lot of thinking goes into our web sites and our clients appreciate the fact that we think not just about ‘building a working website that looks ok’ but something that actually works for their businesses and make their users happy.
The company's UX-focused offering has attracted many noteworthy clients both locally as well as internationally. The client list includes local companies such as Lanka IOC PLC, Galle Fort Hotel, and Altair Luxury Apartments. Internationally, the company has worked with Nissan in Argentina and Canada Trust Bank among others.
Commenting on the winning work, the altair.lk
marketing website, the company says doing good work requires working closely with the client. “We are lucky to have a client that was willing to experiment,” says Heshan, one of the designers who worked on the project. “We went live with at least 3 or 4 versions of the home page, testing, learning and optimizing each time until we had something that worked much better.” ODDLY says although the Altair.lk site was evaluated only on the on-site capabilities of the website on this competition, the site does well overall on other measures such as search engine optimization (SEO), where the it beats all competing developments for relevant keywords.
Not content with simply being another web development company in a crowded market, ODDLY’s MD says that they want to carve a niche providing end-to-end consultancy on web strategy with a focus on user experience. “We want to transform companies with a digital strategy, of which a usable website is only a part” he says. “We’ve assembled the talent to do it”.
This year’s BestWeb.lk Awards ceremony was held at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo on 13th August 2015. Held for the 6th time, BestWeb.lk 2015 recognized websites for their creativity and attractiveness. With the understanding that websites are the front door of a business, the web-based competition provides an exclusive opportunity to promote and popularize Sri Lankan websites, while also introducing Sri Lankan talent to the world.
The websites were judged by an expert panel of judges on technical criteria such as their completeness, navigation, and performance; design criteria; content criteria; and interaction criteria such as quality of interaction, privacy and security, and standards. ODDLY says it hopes to have many more submissions in the 2016 competition. ODDLY’s other work can be seen on their website www.oddly.co
They maintain a presence in Sri Lanka as well as the United States.
