Coconut cultivators point out that an infection by a species of white moth has caused serious threat to the coconut cultivation in the areas: Veherakele, Bangadeniya, Kotukola and Manuwangama in Chilaw. The symptoms of the infection are the browning and drying of leaves.

In reply to an inquiry by Hiru News Dr Jayanatha Gunathilake at the Coconut Research Institute said that it is a caterpillar which has affected the coconut cultivation. He also mentioned that coconut cultivators have been informed on the methods of getting rid of the infection.
