SL aims to reduce budget deficit to 3.5 percent of GDP

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in parliament yesterday delivering the government's medium term economic policy. Sri Lanka will target a budget deficit of 3.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.

According to the Finance Ministry, Sri Lanka's has recorded a budget deficit of 4.8 percent of GDP equivalent to 540 billion rupees in the first eight months of 2015.

The budget deficit is expected to reach 6.5 to 6.8 percent of GDP by the end of the year, significantly above the government's original target of 4.4 percent.
