Minister for Industry and Commerce Rishard Bathiudeen states that steps will be taken to import Basmathi rice under the ongoing bilateral trade agreement between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and will be given to the consumers without duty tax through Sathosa.

He stated this yesterday while he met deputy commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka Sarfas Ahmed Khan at his Ministry.

He also stated that by importing Basmathi rice directly from Pakistan consumers will be able to buy high quality Basmathi rice at a subsidized price.

While Sri Lanka produces 5 million metric tons of rice annually it also imports around 20000 special rice varieties like Basmathi annually.
