The government signed an agreement yesterday (18) with France’s Total S.A to explore for oil and gas in the east coast.

A Joint Study Agreement (JSA) was signed between Total S.A, a leading multinational integrated oil and gas company, and Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Chaminda Weerakkody. The agreement gives Total S.A authorization to explore two ultra-deep water blocks in the east coast.

France’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jean-Marin Schuh along with other embassy officials joined Chairperson of the Petroleum Resources Development Committee Mrs. Sudharma Karunaratne and Director General of the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat Saliya Wickramasuriya in the event.

After an international selection process Total S.A. was given the Sri Lanka east coast exploration study by Cabinet of Ministers in mid last year.
