Chinese tourists have outstripped Indians in Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals. Last month a total of 32,186 Chinese tourists arrived in the country, while official figures of Indian arrivals was at 26,559.
Till this January the largest tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka was from India. The total of Indian tourists in January was 28,895 against 26,083 from China.
In 2005 a total of 316,247 Indians had arrived as against 214,783 Chinese.
A key factor contributing to big leaps in Chinese arrivals was the heavy involvement of Chinese companies in the massive infrastructure development programs launched by President Mahinda Rajapaksa between 2010 and 2014. The projects brought labor from China, Indian media reported.
