The deficit in trade accounts has expanded by 20.2 per cent to 621 million US dollars in March this year as a result of a drop in the island’s imports and exports, a Central Bank reports says.

The cumulative trade deficit during the first three months of 2016 contracted by 2.2 per cent.

The report shows that Sri Lanka’s exports fell by 11.2 per cent to 945.4 million US dollars in March, while imports fell 0.9 per cent further widening the trade gap.

Earnings from textiles and garments exports, which accounted for 46.7 percent of total export earnings, increased by 3.2 percent to 442 million US dollars in March 2016.
