The government has decided to import crude oil from Iran as the United States has removed economic sanctions against Iran.

A discussion with regard to start oil importing to Sri Lanka was held between Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Sangane and his Sri Lankan counterpart Chandima Weerakkody at Tehran Yesterday

An agreement with regard to oil import is scheduled to be signed at the end of the discussions.

Several officers of the Attorney General’s Department have also joined minister Weerakkody in this discussion.

Sri Lanka was compelled to suspend oil import from Iran after the

US imposed sanctions on Iran in 2012.

Meanwhile Petroleum and Petroleum Gas Ministry Secretary Sudarma Karunarathna said that the minister will have additional discussions with Iranian authorities to set up an oil refinery in Sri Lanka.
