Sri Lanka's trade deficit widens by 8 percent in August 2016

Despite an increase in exports Sri Lanka's trade deficit widened 8 percent to 782.8 million dollars in August 2016 from 724.5 million dollars a year earlier.

On a cumulative basis, in the first eight months of 2016, the trade deficit increased by 1.6 percent to 5.538 billion dollars from 7.155 billion dollars recorded during the same period of 2015.

Earnings from exports increased in August 2016 by 8.4 per cent, year-on-year, to 866.3 million dollars in August 2016 from 798.9 million dollars recorded in August 2015, reflecting an increase for the first time after February 2015.
