The gazette notification with regard to imposing maximum price for rice was released midnight yesterday. However, rice was sold in the market above the maximum prices stipulated by the gazette today as well.

Meanwhile, the Association of importers of essential commodities stated that the prevailing rice shortage will be eased once a shipload from Myanmar arrives in the country next week.

The government introduced maximum prices for imported rice yesterday.

Accordingly, samba rice, except Keeri and Suduru varieties should be sold at a maximum price of 80 rupees per kilogram while Nadu should be sold at a maximum price of 72 per kilogram.

However, convener of the Association of Importers of Essential Commodities Hemaka Fernando stated that a shipload of rice from Myanmar is arriving in the country next week.
