The Rice Producers Association of Maranda-gaha-mula says that it is not feasible to sell rice at the maximum retail prices gazetted by the Consumer Affairs Authority, for three varieties.

Association chairman B.K. Ranjith told our news team that the reason for this, is the small and medium millers are compelled to buy stocks of paddy at higher prices.

The Consumer Affairs Authority issued a gazette recently imposing a maximum price of 90 and 80 rupees per kilogram, for locally produced Samba and Nadu respectively.

It states that raw rice should be sold at a maximum price of 78 rupees per kilogram.

However, Kiri Samba and Suduru Samba have been exempted from this.
