Minister Dissanayake to discuss quarantine issue with Russia

The Minister of Plantation Industries Naveen Dissanayake will travel to Russia soon to discuss a decision by Russia to temporary restrict imports of all agricultural products from Sri Lanka, including tea, from 18th of this month.

The decision to impose restrictions was taken after Russian quarantine body found an insect, known as the Khapra beetle, in the packaging of one consignment of tea from Sri Lanka.

Tea from Sri Lanka accounts for 23 percent of Russia's tea market, with other supplies come from India, Kenya, China, and Vietnam.

Russia imported 141,300 tonnes of tea worth $ 436 million in the first 10 months of 2017, according to customs data.

Tea consists of nearly 80 percent of Lankan exports to Russia and Sri Lanka exported $ 143 million worth of tea to Russia last year.

The Ministry said it was an isolated incident and the Minister would explain and clarify steps being taken by Sri Lanka to minimize such cases.
