Sri Lankan pepper exporters say that they are hit by a Minimum Import Price imposed by India for pepper imports in an attempt to protect the local growers.

Early this year, India fixed the MIP for pepper at Indian Rupees 500.

The Indian government said it was done to protect the interests of the domestic pepper growers who have been hit by plummeting pepper prices.

Indian authorities say that pepper produced cheaply in Vietnam was being routed to India through Sri Lanka under the South Asia Free Trade Agreement.

Sri Lanka exports 12,000MT of pepper per annum and of that 75% to 80% is exported to India.
