Central Bank says continuing the trend observed in the past 5 years, the labour force grew by 3.1% in 2017, compared to 2016.

The labour force, which is defined as the economically active population aged 15 years and above, was 8.567 million in 2017, compared to 8.311 million in 2016.

It added, with the growth of the labour force, the employed population also increased by 3.3%, amidst a decline in the unemployed population, indicating an increase in employment opportunities in the economy.

However, this notable increase in the labour force was able to trigger only a marginal improvement in the Labour Force Participation Rate due to the expansion in household population, which includes both economically active and inactive persons.

Thus, the LFPR improved moderately to 54.1% in 2017, from 53.8% in 2016.
