The Ministry of Finance says that a partnership between Japan and Sri Lanka will manufacture of an electric three-wheeler.

The new unit is expected to help replace over one million fossil-fuel powered ‘tuk-tuks’,

Minister Mangala Samaraweera said there are several reasons for the shift from fossil fuel to the electric version of the tuk-tuk, and environmental concerns are one of those.

As part of the Paris agreement, Sri Lanka has pledged a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 2020.

The first batch of electric three wheelers being manufactured in Sri Lanka will be ready by mid-2020, in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
