The Ports Authority has decided to route roll on roll off vessels which dock at the Colombo Port to the Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port with effect from 31st May 2012.
Issuing a communiqué, the Ports Authority pointed out that special concessions too will be provided to the relevant vessels.
The Ports Authority pointed out that the motor vehicle importers have to park their motor vehicles for several days at the Colombo Port due to minimum space capacity at the vehicle parking yards within the Colombo port and barriers in clearing the motor vehicles.
It is reported that this results in an increase in the prices of motor vehicles.
The Ports Authority further pointed out that the docking of roll on roll off vessels at the Hambantota port will prevent the disruptions caused at the Colombo port.
The Ports Authority expects that this could also result in a reduction in prices of motor vehicles.
