Central Bank Statistics Department highlighted states that the Northern Province recorded the highest growth rate of 27.1 percent in Provincial Gross Domestic Product in 2011 while all Provinces recorded double digit growth rates.

The Northern Province contribution to the GDP increased from 3.4 percent in 2010 to 3.7 in 2011 due to the expansion in agriculture, fishing, construction, transportation and financial services, the release said.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa requested the Agriculture Department to explore the possibility to increase dry chilli production in the Dry Zone a few months ago.

The minister requested Northern Province Governor G A Chandrasiri to increase the land extent which will be cultivated with chillies by at least 500 acres during this season, commencing in March 2012.
