Tax on minerals including Stone, sand and soil to be increased

The Geological Survey and Mining Bureau state that the surcharges on all mining of minerals including sand have been increased with effect from today.

In addition, the present surcharge on stone, earth, crusher stone, dolomite and mining earth for bricks and tile have also been increased from 2 percent to 4 percent.

Several members of the Mahaweli United Tippers Association told our news team that the price of sand has already gone up due to the new surcharge.

Meanwhile the present surcharge on imported mineral varieties such as mineral sand and graphite has been increased from 5 percent to 7 percent with immediate effect.

The surcharge on mineral export has also been increased by 7 percent.

Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mining Bureau Senarath Jayasundara said that the aim of the surcharge increase is to swell the government revenue.
