Effective tomorrow the import tax of a kilogram of potatoes has been increased by 15 rupees.
The Ministry of Finance, issuing a release stated that the Special Consumer Goods Tax which was 10 rupees has been amended to 25 rupees.
Elaborating further the ministry also stated that this step was taken as the Yala harvest of local farmers have been arriving in the market since January and in order to provide local farmers with a fair price.
The Ministry of Finance also expects that local farmers will be able to obtain a price between 75 and 80 rupees.
The ministry release also stated that the ministry was expecting a harvest of 150,000 metric tons of potatoes this year and that it expects to make the country self sufficient with potatoes by 2016.
