Vehicle trans-shipments through Sri Lanka's Hambantota port in the South of the country has picked up with over 200 roll-on-roll-off car carriers calling since it began operations in nearly two years ago.

State-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority said the Magam Ruhunupura port in Hambantota had trans-shipped 79,147 vehicles and also unloaded 36,401 units for the local market up to March 2014.

The vehicles come mainly from Indian factories and are kept in a yard at Hambantota and loaded onto car carriers destined to areas such as East Africa.
