Inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers' Price Index, which is computed by the Department of Census and Statistics, decelerated further to 5.6 percent in April 2014, on an annual average basis, from 5.7 percent in March 2014.

This is the eleventh consecutive month, in which inflation has fallen continuously from high of 8.8 percent in May 2013.

Inflation on a year-on-year basis increased to 4.9 percent in April 2014 from 4.2 percent in the previous month, mainly on account of the base effect and increased prices of several food items.
