CAA is not aware of closing down rice mills in Polonnaruwa.
The Consumer Affairs Authority states that rice mill owners have not informed about the gradual closure of several rice mills in the Polonnaruwa district.
Authority Director General J.M.A. Douglas said his institution has the capacity to intervene in settling the problem after discussing the issue with rice mill owners, if they have faced any inconvenience.
The Polonnaruwa District Rice Mill Owners Association stated that 400 mills out of 450 were already closed due to various problems including the unusual increase of paddy prices.
The Association Vice Chairman Gamini Kumarasinghe told our news team that they can restart milling operations in the event the Finance Ministry intervenes to settle the problem.
When inquired from large scale paddy mill owners in Polonnaruwa district regarding the issue, one of the owners Dudley Sirisena said that they are not facing any issues.
He added that certain individuals have been expressing their views to gain political advantages.
