CIC Holdings PLC and Glucerna launch 'Diabeats' to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2014
CIC Holdings and Glucerna, CIC’s nutritional supplement for people with diabetes and pre-diabetes, today announced the launch of an awareness campaign to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2014. As part of this initiative, CIC’s Glucerna launched ‘Diabeats’, a free music track titled ‘Let’s Get Moving’ which helps raise funds to purchase prosthetic limbs for people who have lost a leg or foot due to diabetes. The entire campaign promotes healthy living as a means of preventing and controlling diabetes and to share this message with others, CIC’s Glucerna will conduct an activation at the Independence Square on 14 November, from 4.00 pm onwards.
Present at the launch event were the Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena, Samantha Ranatunga, Managing Director/CEO, CIC Holdings PLC, W.S. Premakumar, Divisional Director, CIC Healthcare and Consumer Division, Dr M.I. Ellawala, Chief Medical Officer, Dehiwala Municipal Council and M. Jayasekaran, Head of Pharmaceuticals, CIC Holdings PLC.
Commenting on the importance of the campaign, Samantha Ranatunga, CEO/ Managing Director, CIC Holdings PLC stated, “Diabetes is fast becoming a problematic local and global concern and it currently affects 382 million people around the world. The latest statistics reveal that 25 percent of the population in Sri Lanka is suffering from diabetes and the number of people affected by the disease is expected to double by 2050. The Ministry of Health has stated that 10 percent of school children are diabetic and 15 percent are at risk of developing the disease. This is a major concern for us at CIC and Glucerna and that is why we are trying to change these statistics by launching this campaign on World Diabetes Day. A healthy lifestyle, including good dietary habits and adequate exercise, play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s blood sugar levels and through the campaign, we will be able to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of healthy living. The ‘Diabeats’ track is a great way to inspire a healthy lifestyle and we hope to raise a significant amount of funds to help provide prosthetic limbs for those who have undergone an amputation due to this disease.”
At the activation site, individuals will be able to get their blood sugar levels checked, make a healthy living pledge and get lifestyle tips that will help them prevent and control diabetes. Individuals will also be able to learn more about Glucerna and sample the product. Glucerna is a tasty supplement which is an ideal breakfast option or snack for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
