As Deadpool and Star Wars: The Force Awakens topped charts in Hollywood, China preferred a more homegrown movie.
Stephen Chow’s ‘The Mermaid’ has become China’s biggest movie ever produced as it bagged an estimated 2.49 billion yuan ($382 million) since its premier in February 08.
‘The Mermaid’ has beaten Monster Hunt, another Chinese movie that earned 2.43 billion yuan and Fast and Furious 7 when they were released in China.
‘The Mermaid’, a fantasy comedy, centers on a mermaid who is sent by her people to kill a businessman who is polluting the sea. The plan goes sideways when the mermaid (Yun Lin) and businessman (Deng Chao) fall in love.
