Veteran actor Michael Douglas was honoured by the United Nations Children's Fund yesterday in recognition of his long-running campaign for the disarmament of nuclear weapons.

The Fatal Attraction star, who has been a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 1998, received the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Peace Award to mark his determined effort to have the bombs eliminated.

After taking to the podium at the Unicef Ball in Beverly Hills, California, Douglas noted how the first atomic weapon hit Hiroshima, Japan a year after his birth in 1944.
