The Supreme Court issued an injunction preventing the Puthukkudiyiruppu and the Maritimepattu Pradeshiya Sabha elections of the Mullaitivu District to be held tomorrow.
Additional Election Commissioner R.M.A. L. Rathnayake said that the scheduled elections for tomorrow were suspended accordingly.
A panel of 3 Supreme Court Judges led by Justice Priyasad Dep who considered a petition that was filed by a group of voters of Puthukkudiyiruppu and Maritimepattu areas ordered to suspend this election until the 27th of March.
The voters stated in their petition that holding of these elections according to the voter registration list of 2011 is unfair.
The petitioners stated that certain voters registered in the 2011 voters list are now dead while some others who turned 18 years after year 2011 are deprived of franchise.

The Supreme Court today upheld a stay order which stops the Puththukudiruppu and Maritime Pattu elections from being held till March 27.
The elections were to be held tomorrow, February 28 after being deferred from March 24, 2012 which was the date initially fixed for the elections.
Puthukkudirippu and Maritime Pattu are both small towns in the Mullaitivu District with a voter base of 29,269 in Puthukudiruppu and 23,489 in Maritime Pattu according to the 2014 revised electoral registers.
