The inaugural session of the 8th parliament of Sri Lanka was held this morning. 

 

MP Karu Jayasuriya was unanimously appointed as the Speaker of new Parliament. 

 

His name was proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and seconded by former Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva.

 

Addressing the parliament, the Prime Minister stated that they intend to implement several reforms including consolidating working committee system, district development councils as well as budget office in parliament within a given period.

 

He also stated that the UNP and the UPFA have requested for a new constitution.
