The Disaster Management Centre says that it has evacuated over 3000 persons in five districts that have been declared as landslide prone areas by the National Building Research Organization.
Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili stated that they have identified over 1500 locations prone to landslides in the districts including Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
About 160 out of 716 families have been evacuated in Nuwara Eliya district due to the risk of landslides.
Majority of persons have been evacuated from the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat.
In addition, measures have been taken to evacuate 23 families from Rannagalawatta in Nebada, and 16 families from Mabadawatta in Thebuwana in Kalutara District.
According to the Disaster Management Centre, 24 families have also been evacuated from Arambakanda, Pelmadulla in Ratnapura district.
Meanwhile, minor floods were reported in Millakanda area after the overflowing of Kalu Ganga due to the south-western monsoon in addition to Baddegama area, following the overflowing of Gin Ganga.
The Irrigation department has cautioned the residents in the surrounding areas of Kalu Ganga, Nilwala River and Attanagalu Oya to remain vigilant of the water level of the respective rivers.
According to the Met Department forecast, showers are expected in several areas of the island.
